Netflix Most: Triple Frontier (2019)

The all action, heist come military blockbuster Triple Frontier was released on Netflix a couple of weeks ago.

Featuring a list stars Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam & Garret Hedlund, you know that the streaming giant has gone all in on this one.

In many ways (depending on your point of view ), we are lucky to see this film.

Triple Frontier spent almost a decade in development hell.

The Hurt Locker helmer, Kathryn Bigelow was attached to direct. Tom Hanks was to play the lead.  Once he was gone, Will Smith was next in line. Then Johnny Depp. Casey Affleck was in talks to appear in the film. Channing Tatum & Tom Hardy also had a shot. As did Marky Mark.

Screenwriter, Mark Boal is the lone survivor from the original production. The movie is expertly directed by A Most Violent Years, JC Chandor.

There will be those who never wish the film saw the light of day. It ain’t breaking the mould of the men on a mission genre. We get the macho tropes & the ridiculous gun play.

Still I was excited about seeing this one. The bombastic trailer dropped about three months ago, and like 50 Cent, I’d been patiently waiting ever since.

What better way to spend a Friday night than throwing on (or in this case pressing play) before sitting down to enjoy a big budget Hollywood action movie?

The story goes like this.

DEA agent, Santiago Pope Garcia (Isaac)is on the trail of a vicious drug lord going by the name of Lorea (Reynaldo Gallegos).

After a bloody & spectacular opening, Garcia discovers Lorea’s whereabouts.

That’s not all. A desperate informant & Pope’s lover, Yovanna (Adria Arjona) reveals that the drug baron has around 75 million dollars stashed in his jungle hideout.

Pope, decides he’s owed that money ” If we’d accomplished half the things that we’ve accomplished in any other profession, we’d be set for life. The question is, “Do we finally get to use our skills for our own benefit?’’ but in order to get it he will need some help.

It’s time to put his old band of special forces pals together – and what a band.

William ‘’Ironhead’’ Miller (Hunnam) spends his time giving pep talks to military personnel.  His little brother, Ben (Hedlund) is a terrible MMA fighter.

Pascal stars as pilot, Catfish Morelos who has been grounded after a cocaine bust.

Tom ‘Redfly’ Davis (Affleck) is trying and failing to sell houses in Florida.

The old crew is in. Except for you know who?

Redfly takes some convincing – in typical Hollywood style he soon relents.

He needs the money.

They all do.

So, the gang is ready to go.

They enter the jungle & a very gripping & exhilarating heist follows.

This is undoubtedly the films greatest moment, but the script continues to enthrall long after our heroes make it out.

Escaping with a shite load of money was never going to be easy.

The film makes an excellent fist at tackling themes of greed & self-destruction.

This band of brothers make increasingly bizarre decisions to reach the border, driven by the bag of loot that they are forced to drag through the Andes.

They all have their motives for wanting the money but what those are, become less & less clear.

There is a shocking twist & some breathtaking set pieces as we hurtle towards the two hours running time.

That helicopter scene – wow.

Triple Frontier ain’t going to be on anyone’s end of year best of list but in terms of pure escapism, it’s really good fun.

The all-star cast put in great performances & the story is fascinating enough to get us as the audience over the line.

Going by how this one ends we may even get a sequel.

Netflix is now in the serious movie making business.

We eagerly await their next big release.

Triple Frontier is another thrilling statement of intent.

A perfect Friday or Saturday night movie at the drive in.

Oh before, I go.

The triple frontier is a (you guessed it), tri  border area between Argentina, Brazil & Paraguay.

You mean the films not set in Mexico?

I wish someone had told me that. It took this writer about one hour into the movie before I figured it out. Thanks, Narcos.

Triple Frontier is available now on Netflix Hungary.
