Ferencvaros took a big step towards securing a second successive NBI title on Saturday evening with a hard fought 1-0 victory at home to closest challengers MOL Fehervar. After a goalless first-half, Oleksander Zubkov’s strike 6 minutes into the second-half strike was enough to keep all three points at the Groupama and extend Ferencvaros lead at the top of the table to 6 points with two games in hand over Ferhervar.
Rebrov’s men, who remain unbeaten in 2020, have lost only once in the league so far this season and their charge towards the title appears unrelenting.
Defeat for MOL Fehervar, coupled with Mezokovesd’s 3-1 win at Debrecen, now leaves the Szekesfehervar side in a battle for second place rather than setting their sights on reclaiming the title they won in 2017/18.
Budapest’s two other NBI sides, Honved and Ujpest, enjoyed mixed fortunes on Saturday afternoon. A Davide Lanzafame inspired Honved narrowly defeated bottom club Kaposvar by a single goal, whilst Ujpest’s poor start to 2020 continued with another defeat, this time at the hands of Zalaegerszeg.
In the weekend’s remaining fixtures, Diosgyor got the better of Paksi and 4th placed Puskas Akademia beat Kisvarda, with ex-Hearts striker David Vanecek netting his 4th goal in his last 3 games. The Czech striker will be looking to continue his red-hot form in next weekend’s clash with 4th versus 5th place clash against Honved, Budapest’s only NBI fixture of matchday 22.
